Artist statement:
When I meet people at an art show who have tried watercolors, they
frequently tell me they are too hard. I am fortunate that my first
exposure to watercolors was an introductory class that let me explore
the technique rather than trying to do a painting. In the class we were
given a small
starter kit of high quality, professional paints and a quality brush. We
were provided good watercolor paper. Quality products produce much
better results.
Encouraged, I bought several books and practiced the exercises until I reached a breakthrough point in one painting which I have hanging in my living room. This painting gave me the confidence to push on so I joined several local art societies, and began to enter contests, winning enough ribbons to encourage me to participate in local art fairs as a vendor.
I still explore new techniques and styles. One of the newest innovations I am doing is to bond watercolor paper to stretched canvas. This allows me to use all my techniques best suited to paper yet have the stability of a flat surface. I also protect the surface with a new spray varnish developed for watercolors. These two techniques eliminate the need for glass.
I am active on the fair circuit in the Northwest. Check my schedule on my website. Sometimes I teach a class in conjunction with the show. I also teach the technique class to clubs and groups. The outline for the class is on my website: www.ronaldsheldon.com.
I am available for commission work. I have art in local galleries and at art fairs.
